Bio
Chris Ruiz has served as Sports Information Specialist at Long Beach City College since 2001. As the college's lone "SID," Ruiz serves as the direct liaison between the college's 17 varsity sports and the media as well as the local community.
Ruiz and the Sports Information Office compile and distribute
news, rosters, game results, statistics, and photos for all
athletic teams. He is also responsible for updating the college's
athletic website (lbccvikings.com) on a daily basis as well as its
social media efforts on Facebook and Twitter.
Other duties include managing the press box and scorer's tables at
various LBCC home events, submitting statistics to the conference
and California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA),
creating game-day programs and other promotional materials, and
coordinating the online broadcasts of LBCC home events. You can
also find Ruiz filling numerous game-day positions at home contests
including public address announcer, scoreboard operator, and
official scorekeeper.
Since joining LBCC, Ruiz has established and greatly advanced
the online presence of the athletic department. In 2003, he helped
launch the Vikings' first online website. And recently in 2011,
Ruiz helped partner LBCC with PrestoSports to become the first
CCCAA-level college to develop its online home. This partnership
led to many other California community colleges as well as the
CCCAA to sign on with PrestoSports. Ruiz also launched the Vikings'
Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest accounts in 2011.
Ruiz is also a member of the LBCC Foundation Athletic Associates
and the Hall of Champions Executive Committee. In those
organizations, Ruiz is in charge of promoting the athletic
department's annual fundraising golf tournament and athletic hall
of fame banquet.
Outside of LBCC, Ruiz currently serves as the Sports Information
Director for the Southern California Football Association
(2008-present) and California Community College Men's Volleyball
Coaches Association (2010-present). With the SCFA and CCCMVCA, his
duties include managing both organizations' websites, overseeing
the reporting of statistics and results, and promoting its
student-athletes and member colleges. Previously, Ruiz served as
the SID and statistician for the Mission Football Conference
(2005-08) and Big 8 Conference (2006-08).
He is a an active member of the California Community College
Sports Information Association and has served as the sports
information director for numerous CCCAA state championship events,
including men's and women's water polo, men's volleyball, and men's
and women's soccer. Ruiz has also assisted at the basketball,
baseball, and softball state championships.
Ruiz has helped guide the adoption of compiling statistics in
sports throughout the state to the use of Statcrew's The Automated
Scorebook. In 2005 with Ruiz as a first-year SID, the Mission
Football Conference became the first conference in California to
require the use of Statcrew for its reporting. The CCCAA now
requires the use of Statcrew for many of its sports. Ruiz also
conducts state-wide Statcrew instructional clinics for the sports
of football, basketball, and baseball/softball.
Ruiz is a 2000 graduate of California State University, Fresno and
earned his bachelor's degree in mass communications and journalism
with an emphasis in public relations. At Fresno State, Ruiz worked
as a student assistant for the Bulldogs' sports information office
for five years and was the lead SID for the wrestling, track and
field, golf, and cross country teams. For two years, Ruiz was
fortunate to work as a student-assistant for Hall of Fame coach
Jerry Tarkanian and the Fresno State men's basketball team. Also at
Fresno State, Ruiz was sports editor for the Collegian newspaper
and did sports broadcasts on college radio station KFSR.
