The Long Beach City College men's soccer team closed the 2010 regular season with a 2-1 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College Compton Center on Friday.
The victory snapped the Vikings' six-game winless streak and improved their record to 7-8-6 overall and 4-6-4 in conference play. Long Beach will likely be shutout of the postseason for the second consecutive season.
Sophomore Walter Cannavina's header goal off a corner kick from Willie Mejia in the 18th minute put the Vikings on the board first.
Compton (3-15-3, 0-12-2) came back to tie in the 36th minute on a penalty kick shot goal by Alex Rodriguez.
But Long Beach took the lead for good in the 58th minute when freshman Jessie Aguirre sent a short pass at midfield to freshman Juan Ortiz. As he dribbled, Ortiz saw Compton goalie Isac Carbajal was out of position and sent a deep shot from over 40 yards out that sailed in for the game-winner.
Sophomore Luis Romero posted two saves in goal for Long Beach. Carbajal was also credited with a pair of saves for Compton.
