The Long Beach City College women's soccer team continued its strong play with a 5–0 victory over Los Angeles City College on Friday afternoon.
The Vikings (11–1–1, 3–0–1 conference) set the tone early and never looked back. Sophomore forward Lorena Moreno opened the scoring in the 35th minute with an assist from Arabella Rosales. Laila Alfadhiel added to the lead in the 41st minute, finding the net off a pass from Mariah Preza.
Long Beach came out firing in the second half, scoring three more times. Brisa Medina netted one in the 48th minute from Alfadhiel's setup, Sky Demelo added another in the 53rd off a Moreno assist, and Arabella Rosales closed out the scoring in the 78th minute with help from Medina.
"I feel like as a team we worked well together to play against such a deep line that was sitting back," said Alfadhiel. "We were able to figure out how to get behind and still put our chances away."
Head Coach Tino Nuñez was proud of how his team adjusted as the game went on. "I think these games where teams have to sit back on you hoping they can stay in the game some way, we just have to find a way to solve it," said Nuñez. "We were forcing things and once we figured it out things opened up. Great job to the girls."
Goalkeeper Mary Valenzuela recorded her sixth shutout of the season, as the Vikings held L.A. City to just two shots on goal.
The win keeps Long Beach unbeaten in conference play. The Vikings will be back in action on Tuesday, October 21, when they travel to Compton for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
