The Long Beach City College softball team used a big third inning to defeat Cerritos College 6-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Nancy Kelly Field.
After being held scoreless through the first two innings and falling behind 2-0 in the second, the Vikings responded in a big way in the third. Long Beach plated five runs in the inning to take control of the game and shift momentum.
The Vikings added an insurance run in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-2 and held Cerritos scoreless over the final five innings.
Michelle Cervantes delivered the key hit of the game, driving in three runs with a double. Haleigh Jacobs finished with two hits, including a double, and scored a run, while Ali Calderon drove in a run and reached base twice.
In the circle, Ella Haugo was dominant in relief, tossing 5.2 innings while allowing just four hits and no runs, striking out six to secure the win.
Long Beach will return to action at home against Riverside City College on March 19, with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
