For the second straight year, Jordi Pineda delivered late-game heroics against Cypress College, this time burying a dramatic game-winner from the top of the box to lift Long Beach City College to a 2-1 road victory.
After a scoreless first half, Asael Sales broke the deadlock in the 60th minute with a thunderous strike from 35 yards out, putting the Vikings ahead 1-0. Cypress responded in the 81st minute, capitalizing on a misplayed ball by the keeper to level the match at 1-1.
With the game headed for extra time, LBCC earned a corner kick in the final moments. Cypress managed to clear the ball, but only as far as Pineda, who struck it cleanly on the first touch and buried it into the side netting for the decisive goal.
"I was just trying to put the ball on frame," Pineda said after the match. "The fact that it went in was a blessing. I'm just glad I could help the team get the win today. I guess I have some good fortune against Cypress."
The victory moves Long Beach to 2-1 on the season. The Vikings will look to carry their momentum into Tuesday's road match at Mira Costa College.
