SANTA ANA – Sophomore Kameron Mayhan recorded a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds to help lead Long Beach City College to an 89-79 upset victory over Santiago Canyon in both teams' season-opener at the Santa Ana College Dana Pagett Tip Off on Thursday.
Long Beach, ranked No. 9 in the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA) Southern California Preseason Poll, opened up the contest with an 11-2 lead and was up by as many as 25 points in the first half to knock off No. 4 Santiago Canyon.
The Vikings led 49-35 at halftime and held off a late Santiago Canyon rally to pull out the win.
Bonard Johnson Jr totaled 21 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists while Chris Herrera added 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Shane Hunter also contributed to the win with 16 points.
Long Beach, now 1-0, will face host Santa Ana on Saturday (Nov. 5) at noon to close out the two-day event.
