Long Beach Falls in Home Opener to Mt. San Jacinto
The Vikings football team opened its 2025 home slate on Saturday against Mt. San Jacinto with a 52-20 loss.
The Long Beach City College football team opened its 2025 home slate on Saturday against Mt. San Jacinto, but despite a strong passing connection between freshman quarterback Wyatt McCauley and wide receiver Owen Tomich, the Vikings fell 52-20 to the Eagles.
The Vikings struck first as McCauley found Tomich on a 5-yard touchdown pass early in the first quarter to give Long Beach a 7-0 lead. Tomich continued to shine, hauling in touchdown receptions of 64 and 49 yards later in the game. The sophomore wideout finished with a dominant performance, recording eight catches for 176 yards and three touchdowns.
McCauley kept the offense moving through the air, completing 16 passes for 248 yards and three scores. However, the Eagles responded with several big plays of their own, including back-to-back touchdowns late in the third quarter that stretched the lead.
Despite Long Beach's offensive flashes, Mt. San Jacinto controlled the tempo in the second half and pulled away with 31 unanswered points.
"In the last two Games, our young team has really come out fighting, and I'm proud of the way they compete," said Acting Director of Football Operations Marques Cooper. "At this level, it's about learning how to capitalize on opportunities when they come and how to finish games. Right now, we've shown flashes — whether it's big plays in the passing game or stretches of strong defense — we need to sustain that over four quarters. We're still building, and there are plenty of bright spots to take away. We will keep working, keep growing, and stay together. I know this team will turn those moments into complete games."
The Vikings will look to bounce back next week as they continue their non-conference schedule with hosting Southwestern College at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m.
