The Long Beach City College football team fell 22-17 to the Bakersfield College Renegades on Saturday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium. With the conference loss, the Vikings drop to 3-4 overall, and 0-2 in the National Northern League.
The Renegades opened the game with a 70-yard touchdown to initially take the lead in the first quarter. They followed up with a 43-yard field goal to hold the Vikings back 10-0. Long Beach responded back with a run from freshman quarterback Jonathan Murphy to close out the quarter, trailing behind 7-10. Murphy was out to play as he totaled 105 yards in the air and 55 yards on the ground against the Renegades.
In the second quarter, sophomore kicker Agustin Delgadillo took command with a 27-yard field goal to tie Bakersfield 10-10. Delgadillo was consistent throughout the game as he was on-for-one on field goals and two-for-two in extra points.
Bakersfield came back in the second half and shut-out the Vikings in the third quarter. The Renegades hit four field goals in a row to take back the lead and hold on to it. In the fourth quarter, freshman running back Mason Bowen broke through the Renegades endzone and scored the Vikings' final run, but it wasn't enough and the Vikings finished the game with a 17-22 loss.
The Long Beach City College football team will return to conference action next week on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Moorpark College at 6 p.m.
