In the new Throwback Thursday Championship Edition Series, the Vikings are revisiting different championships throughout Long Beach City College history. In this second installment, the Vikings go back to 2006 for the latest championship from the baseball team.
The Vikings were at Fresno City College for the final game of the 2006 California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA) State Championship against Sacramento City College.
Starting pitcher Randy Serrato (4-2) was the champion on the mound with only allowing the Panthers to one run on five hits after striking down four. After bearing down through five innings, Serrato was in so much pain from cramping, he stepped down from the hill and Shane Minor (19) came in for the save in the final four innings.
The Vikings were first on the board in the top of the second inning with an RBI home run from shortstop Jovanny Bramasco. Bramasco was named the MVP of the tournament as he finished the game with two runs on four hits and four RBIs.
In the top of the third, Bramasco lit up the Panthers again and doubled down the left field line for two RBI to lead the Vikings 3-0.
Sacramento answered back with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to starting closing in on the Vikings 3-1. With one out and a runner in scoring position, the Vikings defense shut down the rally with a double play to end the third inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Vikings got in scoring position with a pair of singles and catcher Derek Junghanel was on first from a hit by pitch. Second baseman Ryan Averkieff started the Vikings' rally with an RBI single to right field to bring in first baseman Mike Coladonato. Then center fielder Chris Cordova singled down the right field line to score in Junghanel and Bramasco, to extend the Vikings lead 7-1.
The Vikings were still on fire as Bramasco doubled to right center in the top of the ninth to score in third baseman Tommy Peale to finish the game 8-1 and take home the 2006 State Championship.
Peale capped off the best individual season in the history of the CCCAA with the 2006 championship and was inducted in the Long Beach City College Hall of Champions in 2014.
