Women’s Water Polo: Long Beach rolls to 21-1 conference win over El Camino
Both the Long Beach City College men’s and women’s water polo teams opened up their 2010 home and South Coast Conference schedule on Wednesday with impressive wins over visiting El Camino College.
Both the Long Beach City College men's and women's water polo teams opened up their 2010 home and South Coast Conference schedule on Wednesday with impressive wins over visiting El Camino College.
The No. 2 state-ranked Viking men defeated El Camino 16-4, while the No. 4-ranked LBCC women won big by a final score of 21-1. Both teams remain undefeated at 5-0 overall and are 1-0 in conference play.
In women's action, Long Beach was impressive in the big conference victory. The Vikings stormed out to an 8-0 advantage to open the contest and was up 9-1 after the first quarter. Sophomore Alexandria Blank led the charge in the first with three goals.
Long Beach poured it on in the second with seven goals, and posted two more goals in the third and three in the final quarter.
Eight of 10 players on LBCC's roster scored in the contest. Sophomore Melissa Mansana, and freshmen Lauren Sweet and Christine Meier all scored four goals to lead the Vikings.
The Long Beach women have the weekend off, but return to South Coast Conference play next Wednesday (Sept 22) when they travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 4:15 p.m. game.
In the men's contest, Long Beach opened up the game scoring five of the first six goals and held a commanding 7-2 lead after the first quarter. Sophomore Janko Jovanovic scored all of his game-high threee goals in the opening quarter.
Long Beach scored five more goals in the second, and added two each in the third and fourth quarters. 12 different Vikings scored in the contest. Freshmen Michael Rose and Alex Zieg posted two goals each.
The Long Beach men return to action this weekend (Sept 17-18) when they will compete at the two-day Cuesta College tournament. The Vikings open play on Friday at 1:25 p.m. against host Cuesta. That game will be broadcast live online for free at http://www1.network1sports.com/
