Women’s Soccer: Martinez’ two goals leads Long Beach to 2-1 win over Harbor

Freshman forward Denise Martinez scored two goals to lead the Long Beach City College women's soccer team to a 2-1 South Coast Conference win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday.
The win improved the Vikings to 7-5-3 overall and 5-2-1 in conference play.
Martinez' goals were both impressive. She put the Vikings up early with a header goal in the 11th minute. On the play, sophomore Mary Shank's free kick from the left side found Martinez in front of the net. She leaped and deflected the strike past Harbor goalie Natalie Zarro-Anaya to put LBCC up 1-0.
The score remained 1-0 until late in the second half. In the 86th minute, Martinez took a pass from freshman Cristina Landavazo at midfield, dribbled through a pair of Harbor defenders and nailed a shot from 25 yards out into the back of the net.
Percilla Herrera scored a goal in the 90th minute for Harbor (5-8-2, 3-4-1 SCC) to break up the shutout.
Sophomore Sara Thatcher posted four saves in goal for Long Beach while Zarro-Anaya was credited with two saves for Harbor.
The LBCC women return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 26) when they travel to face Pasadena City College in a 1 pm SCC game.
