Softball: No. 20 Vikings take down No. 10 Palomar 6-3 in 2011 home opener
Sophomore second baseman Desiree Villegas (El Rancho HS) went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI to help lead the No. 20 state-ranked Long Beach City College softball team to a 6-3 non-conference win over No. 10 Palomar in the Vikings’ home opener on Friday.

The win improved Long Beach to 4-1-1 overall while Palomar picked up its first loss of the season to fall to 3-1.
Freshman Justine Meddings (Kennedy HS) allowed just two hits and two earned runs in the complete-game effort. Meddings had a no-hitter through five innings before allowing the Comets to score all three runs in the sixth.
Long Beach scored single runs in the first, and third innings before exploding for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Sophomore left fielder Karina Veit (Newport Harbor HS) had a two-run double and sophomore first baseman Michelle Contreras (Norwalk HS) plated another run with a single in the big fourth inning.
Freshman centerfielder Danielle Hannan (El Segundo HS) went 3 for 4 with two runs while sophomore third baseman Melissa McDougall went 2 for 3.
Monica Villarreal (2-1) picked up the loss for Palomar. She allowed six runs and nine hits over 3 2/3 innings before leaving the game after being struck by a line drive.
LBCC returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Santa Barbara City College in a non-conference game.
