Softball: Arias tosses one-hitter in 8-0 mercy-rule win over ECC Compton

The six-inning mercy-rule win improved the Vikings to 17-8-1 overall and 9-5 in the SCC.
Arias (7-7) struck out 10 batters, including the first six of seven she faced. Arias took a perfect game into the bottom of the fifth inning until Compton's Ashley Waldman blooped a single down the right-field line.
Long Beach scored five runs in the first off Compton's Denise Vargas to give the Vikings a commanding lead.
Sophomore first baseman Michelle Contreras (Norwalk HS) drove in freshman right fielder Jordan Collier (Millikan HS) with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth to end the ball game.
Sophomore shortstop Melissa Schaefer (El Segundo HS) went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBI to lead Long Beach at the plate. Sophomore right fielder Brittney Holden (Big Bear HS) went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and Contreras was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and a double.
For Compton (0-12, 0-12 SCC), Vargas allowed seven earned runs and nine hits over 4 2/3 innings. She struck out two and walked six.
The Vikings were fresh off their 12-6 South Coast Conference win at East Los Angeles College on Wednesday. The victory was LBCC career win No. 100 for co-head coaches Melissa Angel and Jack Hutchinson.
Long Beach is back in action again this weekend (Apr 2-3) when it will compete at the Ventura College tournament. The Vikings return to conference play on Tuesday (Apr 5) when it hosts Mt. San Antonio College at 3 p.m.
