The Vikings opened conference play with a 6-1 loss to the Chaffey College Panthers on Thursday afternoon at the Joe T. Hicks Field. The Vikings drop to 8-8 overall and 0-1 in the South Coast Conference. The Panthers were first on the board with two runs in the top of the second inning and then added another in the sixth.
After two scoreless innings, Chaffey put three more runs up to lead the Vikings 6-0. In the bottom of the ninth, freshman shortstop David Rivera got on base with a single to right field and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Sophomore third baseman Reese Berberet was next up to smash the ball into center field for the RBI to put the Vikings on the board.
Sophomore pitcher Jacob Alcorn (4-1) took his first loss of the season on the mound but earned a career-high record by striking out 10 Panthers in seven innings of work.
The Vikings then went on to defeat Chaffey College on Saturday with an 11-0 shutout. Reese Berberet had a 3RBI home run. The Vikings play again today at home against East Los Angles College at 2 p.m. To view the remaining schedule, click here.
The Vikings fell to the El Camino Warriors 4-6 in their second South Coast Conference contest. With the loss, the Vikings drop to 10-9 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Sophomore pitcher Alissa Cienfuegos (5-8) took the loss with six runs on nine hits, while striking out three in nine innings. The Warriors were first on the board in the top of the second inning with a 2 RBI single. The Vikings caught up in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single from sophomore catcher Samantha Ontiveros to bring in freshman third baseman Raven Agapay.
Freshman designated player Elena Vizcarra was at the dish and singled to bring in Ontiveros and then freshman center fielder Emilee Hoppe made it home by a throwing error from the Warrior center fielder to take the 3-2 lead for the Vikings. Agapay homered in the bottom of the third inning to extend the lead for Long Beach 4-2. The Warriors slowly picked up their offense with one run in the fourth inning and then scored three more in the top of the seventh to take the lead and the win over the Vikings.
The Vikings went on to play LA Harbor on Thursday and lost 5-3. The Vikings will play again today against Compton College at 3 p.m. at the Viking Softball Field. To view the remaining schedule, click here.
Men's Volleyball- No. 1 Men's Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to 12 in Three-Set Win Over No. 5 Santa Barbara
The No. 1 Long Beach City College men's volleyball squad looked to extend their reign in the top-seed as they hosted No. 5 Santa Barbara City College on Friday evening. The Vikings swept the Vaqueros in three sets and earned their twelfth-straight win with set scores reading 25-13, 25-17, 25-22.
The Vikings took control offensively in the first two sets and flew through the Vaqueros with ease. The Vikings averaged .556 accuracy in the first set and .400 in the second. Sophomore middle blocker Victor Villarreal led the team with eight kills and three block assists. Villarreal was precise the entire game at the net by leading the Vikings with a .600 kill percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Andrew Pearson totaled three service aces during the match, and now has 11 on the season.
Freshman setter Melbe Perez collected 23 assists behind the ball. Perez averages 7.72 assists per game and has totaled 278 assists so far. In the third set, the Vaqueros came out strong and fought back by initially taking the lead and making the Vikings work for the final set win. After the final timeout, and the Vaqueros only two points behind the Vikings, Villarreal sealed their twelfth consecutive win with the final kill and the assist from Perez.
The top-ranked men's volleyball team will play again at No. 7 Fullerton College on Wednesday, Mar. 7 at 6 p.m. To view the remaining schedule, click here.
The men's and women's swim team traveled to Pasadena College to participate in the LBCC/El Camino/ Pasadena Meet last Friday for their first conference meet.
Sophomore Shaun Spaulding took second place overall in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 56.54.
Sophomore Lindsey Mizrahi took first place overall in the 100 yard butterfly event with a time of 1:11.35.
Freshman Kobe Jackson also took first place in the 50 yard freestyle event with a time 22.86.

Track & Field
The track & Field team traveled to CSULB to compete in the Beach Opener this past weekend.
Sophomore Tylor Wallace won the Long Beach State Men's 800 meter with a time of 1:58.71. With that time, Wallace advances to an early season #9 in the state. To view the race, click here.
Freshman Victor Galvan accomplished personal record with 5:30 for the 1500 meter.

The beach volleyball was recently ranked No.1 in the state by the AVCA CCCAA Beach Volleyball Coaches Poll. Over the weekend, the Vikings brought home a 3-2 win over Irvine Valley, a 4-1 win over Santa Barbara City, and a 5-0 shut-out over Fullerton College.
