Viking Athletic Week in Review- 9/5/2017: Football Opens Season With First Victory at Pasadena, Men's Soccer Extends Winning Streak

Women's Soccer
Women's soccer tied 1-1 in their first game at Santa Monica College on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Sophomore forward Juliana Carrillo scored the first goal of the season in the 21st minute of the game against the Corsairs. The Vikings then participated in the Nike Soccer Community College Showcase at Ventura College on Thursday and Saturday, but fell in both games against the College of the Canyons and Hartnell. Men's Soccer- Men's Soccer Remain Undefeated in First Home Game
The Long Beach City College men's soccer opened the season with three-game winning streak against Victor Valley, Golden West and Cuyamaca College. The team hit the home field for the first time by facing off against the Cuyamaca College Coyotes last Friday afternoon on the Viking Soccer Field. Sophomore forward Christopher Ribet scored the only goal in the game in the 87th minute to seal the 1-0 victory for the Vikings. Freshman defender Adrian Martinez was instrumental this week in the team's victories by providing the assist to Ribet in Cuyamaca game. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.

Football
Vikings football opened their season with a big 52-17 win at Pasadena City College on Saturday evening. Sophomore quarterback Grant Lowary received the Southern California Football Association Central League Offensive Player of the Week Award for Week One. Lowary was first in the league for passing 416 yards in one game and had four touchdown passes. Wide receiver Cedric Byrd stood out in the game with a 92 yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Vikings. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.

Women's Volleyball- Volleyball Defeats San Diego in Home Opener
The Vikings split a pair in this week's home games in the Long Beach City College Quad Tournament. The women's volleyball team fell against the Saddleback Gauchos in the first game (21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 10-15) and then came back and defeated the San Diego Mesa Olympians in their second game in a three-straight set victory (25-20, 25-19, 25-16). Sophomore Tatyana Umi led the way in the game against Saddleback with 20 kills to go along with two aces. In the second game against San Diego Mesa, freshman outside hitter Shelby Cole led the team with 11 digs. Freshman Aysia Mabry and setter Sierra Davis both nailed three service aces each to help seal the first win of the season for LBCC. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.
