Viking Athletics Week in Review – 4/10/17: No. 3 Men's Volleyball Extends its Western State Lead, Baseball Earns Sixth-Straight Victory

No. 3 Men's Volleyball

It was another top-ranked victory for the Vikings on Friday evening as they took down No. 4 Santa Monica and extended their Western State Division lead in a five-set thriller. Sophomore outside Travis O'Gorman (East Northport, NY) came to play by pacing the Vikings offense. Sophomore middle Elai Mama (Moreno Valley, CA) dominated the middle, while sophomore setting tandem Jayce Ashment (Gilbert, AZ) and Gary Trejo (Downey, CA) kept the offensive train flowing while dually providing stellar defense. South's No. 9 Softball

The Vikings went 3-0 on the week highlighted by a crucial victory over the Pasadena City College Lancers by the final score of 3-1. Freshman pitcher Alissa Cienfuegos (Carson, CA) was lights out in the circle by allowing just two hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters en route to her ninth complete game. She bumped her strikeout total to 90 which is good for 12th in the state. Freshman first baseman Julia Juarez (Long Beach, CA) recorded the big hit of the day by barreling a two-RBI double, while freshman designated player Vanessa Montanez (Lakewood, CA) recorded a sacrifice fly to push across freshman pinch runner Lauren Blevins (Downey, CA). South's No. 18 Baseball

The Vikings rolled to three wins this week by completing a series-sweep over Chaffey and a dominant victory over LA Mission. Freshman right-fielder Val Stammler (Long Beach, CA) extended his hitting streak to 15-games with a 4-for-6 showing against LA Mission. He is hitting .397 in that span. Sophomore shortstop Antonio Monroy (Maywood, CA) extended his hitting streak to double-digit games with seven of the games going for multi-hit contests. Freshman pitcher Josh Agnew (Long Beach, CA) picked up his seventh win of the season, while sophomore pitcher Schuyler Hill (Long Beach, A) snagged his fifth win of the year. Women's Beach Volleyball

The Vikings split in its home match by defeating Palomar via sweep, but falling to MiraCosta, 3-2. In the showdown against MiraCosta, sophomore Sarah Miller (Long Beach, CA) and freshman Paige Panter (Southgate, TX) were the lone victory in two sets. They gained revenge after falling to the Spartan's number one team two weeks ago by taking them down with ease. The scores read 21-18 and 21-12. Freshman tandem Jordan Diaz (La Habra, CA) and Marina Adolpho (Long Beach, CA) worked to a thrilling, three-set victory after dropping the first set, 17-21, but coming back to win the final two sets with the scores reading 22-20 and 15-10. The other contest that went to three sets was at the hands of freshman Valeria Payan (Pacoima, CA) and sophomore Geraldine Poon (Long Beach, CA). They won the first set, but were unable to seal the deal down the stretch. Long Beach handled Palomar after sweeping them with ease. All matches only lasted two sets with the largest margin of victory going to Payan and Poon. They rebounded to take their match with set scores reading 21-8 and 21-11.
