Viking Athletics Week in Review - 3/20/17: Men's Volleyball Wins Second-Straight Top-5 Matchup, Softball Takes Down No. 9 Santiago Canyon in Extras

Long Beach had an exciting week of competition with multiple wins that came down to final races and final at-bats. LBCC earned an overall record of 6-5 on the week with each program earning at least one victory.

No. 5 Men's Volleyball

The No. 5 Vikings faced off against No. 3 Santa Monica this past Friday for their first conference matchup of the season. LBCC hauled in a 3-1 victory with sets scores reading 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, and 25-10. Freshman outside Cyrus Fa'alogo (Salt Lake City, UT) led the way with 23 kills on a .372 hitting percentage, while freshman Noah Taitano (Carson, CA) and sophomore Travis O'Gorman (East Northport, NY) combined for 17 kills. Sophomore middle Elai Mama (Moreno Valley, CA) rose up for nine blocks and sophomore Jayce Ashment (Gilbert, AZ) served up 33 assists. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.

Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving

Men

A gold-medal finish in the 400 Free Relay sealed a 2-0 victory on the day as freshman Ian Dretzka, freshman Timothy Nilan, freshman Shaun Spaulding, and freshman Ryan Sar completed the relay with a time of 3:23.9 which was four seconds better than the second-place finishing Pasadena. Sophomore Mark Denison continued to make waves in the pool by earning a trio of first-place finishes. He started by touching the wall first in the 200 Free with a time of 1:48.01, backed by a 50 Free crown with a mark of 21.66. He finished his solo racing by standing atop the podium in the 100 Free with a time of 48.37.

Women

Freshman Samantha Wooley highlighted the efforts by earning two individual first place finishes and being part of one first-place relay. The relay came first as she teamed up with freshman Cori Reynold, Lindsey Mizrahi, and Charli Chavarria to win the 200 Medley Relay at a time of 2:01.18. Wooley continued on to place first in the 100 Back with a time of 1:03.84 and the 50 Free at a mark of 25.29. She capped her efforts with a time of 2:22.87 in the 200 Back to earn second place. Reynolds placed second in the 200 Breaststroke with a mark of 2:51.23, while Mizrahi reigned supreme in the 100 Free by standing atop the podium with a time of 1:00.26.

Women's Beach Volleyball

The Vikings remained undefeated on the season after defeating a pair of competitors this Friday. After handling San Diego Mesa with a 5-0 win, the Vikings rallied to take home a 3-2 victory over Palomar to remain undefeated on the season. The number four and five teams for the Vikings excelled throughout the day as they carried a good amount of weight for Long Beach down the stretch. Sophomore Geraldine Poon (Long Beach, CA) and freshman Valeria Payan (Pacoima, CA) went undefeated throughout the two matches, while freshman Amber Bangma (Long Beach, CA) and sophomore Breana Torres (Long Beach, CA) mirrored their outputs by not dropping a set in both matches. In the match against Palomar, Torres and Bangma did not allow their opponent to reach over six points in either set, while Poon and Payan allowed 10 points or fewer in each set. No. 13 Baseball

The No. 13 Vikings went 1-2 on the week after hauling in a 6-1 victory over Pasadena on Saturday to avoid a series sweep and snap a three-game losing streak. Sophomore pitcher Schuyler Hill (Long Beach, CA) earned his third victory of the season after tossing 5.1 innings and striking out seven batters. Freshman third baseman Reese Berberet (Fallbrook, CA) launched a two-run homerun, while sophomore shortstop Antonio Monroy went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Softball

After dropping a conference contest to the El Camino College Warriors early in the week, the Vikings rebounded by splitting a doubleheader with No. 9 Santiago Canyon. The Vikings dropped the opening game of the series by the final score of 2-1, but regrouped to haul in a 2-1 victory in game two in extra innings. Freshman first baseman Julia Juarez (Long Beach, CA) recorded the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth to send home sophomore third baseman Denise Flores (Carson, CA) to haul in the win. Freshman center fielder and relief pitcher Alissa Cienfuegos (Carson, CA) earned the victory in the circle and recorded an RBI, while freshman pitcher Vanessa Montanez (Lakewood, CA) tossed seven strong innings. Men's Track & Field

Sophomore Bayron Manuel snapped the tape in the 110M Hurdles by finishing with an overall time of 14.43. Freshman Manuel Gomez placed seventh overall in the 400M Hurdles, while freshman Patrick Washington followed with a 10th place finish in the 400M Hurdles.
