Three former Long Beach City College student-athletes, two
current Vikings, and one former head coach were honored by the Long
Beach Century Club at their annual Sports Night Award Banquet on
Tuesday night at The Grand in Long Beach.
A former LBCC standout quarterback received the Century
Club’s highest honor, as Greg Barton was inducted in the Hall
of Fame. Barton started for two years in 1964 and 1965, leading his
Vikings to an undefeated national championship in 1964. He was
named an All-American both years, as the Vikings won the Junior
Rose Bowl in '64 and the Prune Bowl in '65. Barton went on to play
at the University of Tulsa before playing in the NFL with the
Detroit Lions, the Canadian Football League, and the World Football
League.
Former LBCC Women’s Soccer head coach Mauricio Ingrassia was
honored as the Century Club’s Coach of the Year. This past
fall, Ingrassia led the Long Beach State women’s soccer team
to its third straight Big West Conference championship and a
historic NCAA Championships Elite Eight appearance.
Over nine seasons at LBCC (1995-2003), Ingrassia led the Vikings
to a pair of No. 1 final national rankings and five California
Community College state titles.
2010-11 LBCC athletes of the year Scott Butler and Sarah Agopian
were also honored by the Century Club. Butler and Agopian both
starred in aquatics, with Butler competing in water polo and
swimming and Agopian leading the women’s water polo team. The
duo earned All-American, All-Southern California, and All-South
Coast Conference honors.
Rounding out the LBCC honorees were current Viking sophomores
Dylan Marquess of the men’s volleyball team and Danielle
Hannan from softball. Both received the $2500 Harold Hoffman
scholarship.
